AIA’s materials initiative

The materials we use have a big impact on the environment, our communities and our health. To select materials wisely, we have to know what’s in them and what effects they have before, during and after their use.

That’s why AIA promotes transparent and accurate information about materials—so architects have information to help choose the right materials for every project.

Materials transparency matters today—and tomorrow

We’re developing tools and education to help you measure, understand and better balance the impact of the materials you use.

This knowledge gives you greater control over your projects and products. It lets you calibrate your business risks and discover opportunities. And developing novel uses of less impactful materials can open up new markets and efficiencies.

Materials transparency is an enormous goal. But it’s achievable. AIA works with industry partners, members and experts from multiple fields to stay on top of this rapidly emerging area.

As architects, we specify materials every day. Our decisions affect the environment, our communities and our health. Watch video >
