School for Children with Autism

School for Children with Autism incorporates design elements that contribute to calm and focused learning environments for those on the autism spectrum. Such features include pocket spaces, and varieties of scale and color.

The theme of the EP Exhibit 2016 is It Takes a Community. Selected projects showcase the best work from young designers highlighting community impact and engagement.

This school is designed with a special focus on providing a nurturing environment for children with autism spectrum disorder. Based on the growing body of scientific evidence supporting the theory that people with autism spectrum disorder are highly perceptive to the environment in which they inhabit. Subtle features such as lowered or exaggerated proportion, repetition, and color, as well as availability of natural and ambient lighting, all play a part in how calm and focused children can be.

The school is arranged flexibly for both ends of the autistic spectrum. Sunny and voluminous corridors are bordered with compressed and muted circulations. These corridors can further compress into specialized ‘pocket spaces’ each with a unique and comforting layout for each child.
